You stepped outside, looked up, and the moon is the wrong colour. Not silver-white but orange, or coppery, or a dull smoky red — and it looks bigger than it should.

So why is the moon orange tonight? The short answer is that you are not looking at the moon. You are looking at the moon through a lot of Earth’s atmosphere, and the atmosphere is doing something to the light before it reaches your eye.

An orange moon has four common causes. Three of them are ordinary. One of them is worth putting in your calendar. Here is how to tell them apart.

Why is the moon orange tonight? The 30-second answer

The moon does not glow. It reflects sunlight, and sunlight contains every colour.

When that light passes through air, short blue wavelengths get scattered sideways far more than long red ones. Scientists call this Rayleigh scattering. It is the same reason the daytime sky is blue and the setting sun is red.

Strip enough blue out of white light and what is left over is orange and red.

So an orange moon means one thing above all: the light reaching you has travelled through more air, or dirtier air, than usual.

Cause 1: The moon is sitting low on the horizon

This is the most common explanation by a wide margin, and the least dramatic.

When the moon is high overhead, its light punches straight down through the atmosphere on the shortest possible path. When it is just above the rooftops, that same light comes in at a shallow angle and has to plough through a far thicker slab of air.

More air means more blue scattered away. The result is an orange moon at moonrise that fades back to plain white an hour or two later.

If you saw the orange moon just after it rose and it looks normal by midnight, that was it. Nothing else is going on.

Cause 2: Wildfire smoke

This is the cause that made 2026 unusual, and it is why so many people across North America have been asking the question this summer.

Canadian wildfires erupted across central Canada in mid-July after a heat dome dried out Ontario, and lightning did the rest. NASA’s visualisation of the event shows smoke travelling thousands of miles from Ontario into the northeastern United States between 14 and 19 July.

Smoke particles do the same job as extra atmosphere. They scatter blue light out and let red and orange through. A thin smoke layer gives you a yellow moon. A thicker one gives you an orange moon. A really dense plume can turn it blood-red.

Does an orange moon mean the air is dangerous?

Not necessarily — and the difference comes down to altitude.

Smoke that rides high in the atmosphere will colour the moon beautifully while leaving the air you actually breathe more or less clean. Smoke that sinks to the surface colours the moon and poisons the air.

In July 2026 the smoke did the second thing. NASA notes that the downward motion of cold air behind a weather front kept the smoke near the surface rather than aloft. Daily average fine-particle pollution in the Baltimore–Washington area approached 200 micrograms per cubic metre on 17 July, triggering Code Purple alerts.

So an orange moon is not itself a warning sign. It is a prompt to go check an air quality index for your area, because the same particles might be sitting at street level or might be five kilometres up.

The practical test: if the sun looked pale and washed-out during the day and the horizon was milky, the smoke is probably low. If the day was clear and only the night sky looks odd, it is probably high.

Cause 3: Dust, pollen and ordinary haze

Smoke is not the only aerosol in the air.

Saharan dust regularly crosses the Atlantic and reaches Florida, the Gulf Coast and the Caribbean in summer. Agricultural dust, pollution haze and even heavy pollen do a milder version of the same thing.

Dust tends to produce a yellow or dirty-gold moon rather than a deep orange moon. Smoke pushes harder toward red. In practice they are almost impossible to tell apart by eye, and both are usually mixed with the horizon effect anyway.

Cause 4: A lunar eclipse — and there is a big one coming

This is the only cause on the list that is a genuine event rather than a viewing angle.

During a lunar eclipse, Earth moves between the sun and the moon. Direct sunlight stops reaching the lunar surface. It does not go fully dark, though, because some light grazes the edge of Earth, bends through our atmosphere and spills into the shadow — with the blue already scattered out of it.

Put another way: you are seeing every sunrise and sunset on Earth projected onto the moon at once.

The next one is worth staying up for. On the night of 27–28 August 2026, a very deep partial eclipse will cover 96.2 percent of the moon’s face, and the best views on the planet will be from the Americas. Space.com notes it will be the most impressive lunar eclipse anywhere on Earth until a total eclipse on 31 December 2028.

Start watching about 40 minutes before those times to catch Earth’s shadow creeping across the disc. No eye protection is needed — that rule applies to solar eclipses, not lunar ones.

One correction worth making in advance: this is not a true blood moon. A blood moon requires totality, and 3.8 percent of the moon will stay outside Earth’s dark shadow. Expect a rusty, coppery disc with one bright sliver still showing.

Why the moon also looks enormous

The colour is real physics. The size is not.

A moon near the horizon measures exactly the same as a moon overhead — you can prove it by photographing both with the same lens. Your brain simply judges it against trees, buildings and hills and concludes it must be huge. This is the moon illusion, and it has been argued about since antiquity without a fully settled explanation.

Because both effects peak at the same moment, a low orange moon reliably looks enormous as well. That combination is what usually sends people to a search bar.

Three checks to identify what you are seeing

Run these in order and you will almost always land on the right answer.

Is it low in the sky, and does it turn white later? Horizon effect. Nothing more.

Was the sun pale and the sky milky during the day? Smoke or dust — and check your local air quality.

Is it high in the sky, orange, and noticeably dimmer than a normal full moon? That is an eclipse, and it will be on the calendar.
