Why did Neymar retire right after the Norway match?
Brazil lost 2-1 to Norway in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on July 5, 2026. Erling Haaland scored twice for Norway. Neymar came on as a second-half substitute and converted a stoppage-time penalty, but it only closed the gap to 2-1. It was too little, too late, and Brazil’s World Cup run ended in the Round of 16.

Despite that record, he never won a World Cup with Brazil, and the team hasn’t gone past the quarterfinals since Neymar joined the squad.
He only played two matches at this year’s tournament, both as a substitute, after a right hamstring injury limited his fitness heading into the World Cup. His place in the squad was uncertain until shortly before the tournament began.
Why did Neymar wait until now to decide?
He had said for months that he was taking his career “year by year” and would decide his future once the 2026 season ended. The World Cup exit appears to have settled the question early for the national team specifically, even though he’s still expected to play for Santos through the rest of 2026.
By retiring now, Neymar will not be part of Brazil’s squad at the 2030 World Cup, when he would have been 38 years old.
