Andy Burnham became the UK’s 59th prime minister on Monday, and almost immediately, nearly as many people were searching for his family as for his policies. His wife, Marie-France van Heel, is a Dutch-born brand consultant who has spent nearly three decades deliberately staying out of the spotlight — and now finds herself walking into 10 Downing Street anyway.

Here’s what’s actually known about her, and about the three children she and Burnham raised largely outside the public eye.

Who is Marie-France van Heel?

Known to friends as “Frankie,” van Heel was born in the Netherlands and completed part of her schooling in Belgium before moving to the UK in the late 1980s. She met Burnham at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, where, by his own account, he wasted little time telling her his plans: he intended to become an MP, and had no interest in settling in London to do it.

Not long into the relationship, van Heel asked Burnham’s blessing to appear on the dating show Blind Date, hoping it might help her break into children’s television presenting. He agreed. Clips from her 1992 appearance, in which she turned down a suitor named Will Harris, are still online — a detail with an odd postscript, since Harris later became a communications adviser for the Conservative Party.

Marriage and children

Burnham and van Heel married in 2000, prompted in part by van Heel’s pregnancy with their first child. Burnham has described his reaction bluntly: it was “a complete shock,” and his first thought was that they’d need to get married. Their son, Jimmy, was born that March; two daughters, Rosie and Anne-Marie, followed in the years after.

Van Heel briefly stepped into a more public role during Burnham’s unsuccessful 2015 Labour leadership bid, appearing alongside him at campaign events. Since then she has kept a low profile, closing her social media accounts and rarely giving interviews. She was, however, photographed with Burnham and their daughter Rosie on election night when he won the Makerfield by-election in June — the contest that set his return to Parliament, and eventually Downing Street, in motion.

Her career

Van Heel built an independent career in marketing and brand strategy, working early on for Sky and designing logos for organizations including England Rugby and the BBC. She ran her own consultancy, MVH Marketing, from 2008 to 2011, later became chief strategy officer at the London firm Heavenly, and now works for Be.EV, an electric-vehicle charging network, and its parent company. At the time of Burnham’s leadership campaign, she also sat on the board of the humanitarian group Plan International.

A family shaped by loss

Van Heel’s family has been touched by hereditary breast cancer. Her sister Claire died of the disease at 39, leaving four children under the age of eight. Their mother and another sister were also treated for breast cancer around the same period; testing later confirmed the family carries the BRCA1 gene, and van Heel’s remaining sister chose a preventive double mastectomy in 2010. Burnham has said the diagnosis was, in his words, “liberating rather than depressing” for the family, since it lifted the uncertainty that had hung over them.

What changes now that Burnham is PM

Spouses of British prime ministers don’t have a formal role, but they’re rarely able to stay entirely out of view — state visits and official functions tend to draw them in regardless of preference. Van Heel, by all accounts a deeply private person, is expected to follow a path closer to that of her predecessor, Victoria Starmer, who appeared occasionally over her husband’s tenure but largely avoided the spotlight herself.
